Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Payroll Specialist for a temp-to-hire opportunity with one of our national non-profit clients. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience processing multi-state payroll, managing both union and non-union employee payroll, and utilizing Workday for payroll administration. This role requires exceptional attention to detail, strong compliance knowledge, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing. This position is fully onsite in Lower Manhattan.

Key Responsibilities

• Process weekly, bi-weekly, and semi-monthly payroll for employees across multiple states.
• Administer payroll for both union and non-union workforce populations, ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements and company policies.
• Utilize Workday to maintain employee payroll records, process payroll transactions, and generate reports.
• Review and validate payroll data, including new hires, terminations, compensation changes, bonuses, commissions, and deductions.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations.
• Manage garnishments, wage attachments, tax levies, and other involuntary deductions.
• Reconcile payroll accounts and assist with month-end payroll-related journal entries.
• Research and resolve payroll discrepancies, employee inquiries, and tax-related issues.
• Prepare payroll reports for management, finance, and external auditors.
• Support year-end payroll activities, including W-2 processing and audits.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of payroll processing experience.
• Experience processing multi-state payroll.
• Strong knowledge of payroll regulations, tax withholding, and wage and hour compliance.
• Experience administering payroll for both union and non-union employees.
• Hands-on experience with Workday strongly preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables, and data reconciliation.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to handle confidential information.
• Knowledge of prevailing wage requirements and union benefit calculations a plus.
• Experience working in a high-volume payroll environment.

Compensation: $40 - $45/hr, depending on experience.
